Movement Therapy Sessions

My Movement Therapy Sessions combine Integrated Manual Therapy and Integrated Strength Training to give my clients better, faster, and longer-lasting results. My mission is to help you breathe, stabilize, and move to the best of your potential. Proper breathing will saturate your body with oxygen, improve your stabilization, and allow you to move in the most efficient way possible.  This will help you get better faster, decrease your chance of injury and improve your athletic performance.  Almost every faulty movement pattern has its beginning in faulty breathing. Utilizing a functional assessment, my goal is to identify any of your potential faulty movement patterns.  From here, I will utilize specific muscle testing procedures to identify any muscle imbalances which may be present.  With this information, I will then be able to determine which muscles/receptors will need to be treated with manual therapy and which muscles/movement patterns need specific exercises.  Homework exercises will be prescribed to reinforce the changes made during your treatment at my office. Faulty movement patterns can take  roughly 300 repetitions to develop and roughly 3000 repetitions to correct.  For this reason, it is vital to your recovery that you practice your home exercises given at the end of each visit in between your appointments. Once your condition has stabilized and your symptoms are decreasing, it is important for you to integrate your new movement patterns.  I strongly encourage all of my clients to take advantage of my 5 min Movement Flow and the prescribed maintenance exercises I give you even after your treatment program, which will reinforce your awareness of diaphragmatic breathing and stabilization.  These movements will incorporate all of the concepts integral to a speedy recovery.  After learning how to properly create spinal stability, you can progress into other small group classes to continue integrating your good habits. Manual Therapy Breakdown

Every session begins with a comprehensive assessment followed by hands-on treatment as well as corrective exercise and movement re-education. I incorporate exercise and movement training into my treatments because I believe in not only resolving your pain but also re-patterning your body to move correctly to prevent future dysfunction. Please come to your appointment in comfortable workout clothing as this technique is done fully clothed. The manual therapy techniques that I use are cutting edge clinical bodywork and offer the most advanced "technologies" in Sports Medicine available to date.  It's designed as a system to get to the "root" cause of pain. instead of just treating symptoms.  It's methodology is very different than what is offered in all other massage therapy settings, and it starts with assessments. Assessments are the only way to determine the cause of dysfunction and pain.  This type of bodywork requires extensive study and application, a thorough understanding of kinesiology and biomechanics, as well as advanced palpation skills to detect subtleties in fascia, or soft tissue. It's never comprised of just one or two modalities, such as only deep tissue. It combines many modalities to get you the results you need.  And it has to be done pain-free, since that's the only way your body will cooperate and release, despite popular belief.   While manual therapy can be a life-saver when it comes to rehabilitating an injury or relieving chronic pain, it can be even more effective when used with a "prehab" mindset, in conjunction with a good training program. Prehab is short for preventative rehabilitation. If you can address an underlying issue in regards to your movement before it manifests itself as an injury, you will save yourself a lot of pain, time, money, and stress. If you take your training and health seriously, I encourage getting some form of bodywork done regularly. Whether or not you live an active lifestyle, it is still important to have your movement inefficiencies and dysfunctions corrected and managed with regular bodywork and basic corrective exercise. I like to incorporate corrective bodywork in a unique way. Ultimately, any techniques or corrections that I use are done so with the primary purpose of optimizing your movement. People who move well seldom suffer from chronic pain. If we can find and treat the source of your movement dysfunction, chances are we will also resolve your painful symptoms. Traditional therapies can often be shortsighted when it comes to addressing the root causes of your symptoms. In fact, more often than not, the area you are experiencing symptoms is not necessarily the origin. It is important to take a look at everything that could potentially be playing a part if your symptoms. By assessing your movement capacity in detail, I am able to address the root cause of your pain and dysfunction much more effectively.


Our initial session is more of an assessment than anything. We take the time to delve into the nuts and bolts of your current symptoms. I then take you through a thorough assessment to get a better idea of how to go about treating you. Due to the nature of how I work, I prefer that new clients are prepared to commit to coming in for at least 3 sessions within a concentrated time frame. This gives us a session for a thorough assessment, a session for the bulk of the initial treatment process, and then a follow up session in which we assess how you are progressing, continue treatment, and decide how to best proceed with your treatment. If we aren't making significant progress after 3 sessions, it's likely the case that I'm not the professional to best handle your situation, and I will do my best to steer you in the right direction. I have no problem referring you to another practitioner if I feel their skill set is better suited to help you.  You are strongly urged to come to your appointment hydrated, and to hydrate with water after your session to reduce any risk of post session soreness.  Usually this does not occur if your body is properly hydrated. You can expect that I will "check in" frequently during your session to make sure you are comfortable at all times.  


Strength Training Breakdown

Integrated Strength Training is an intelligently-designed training system guaranteed to re-establish a foundation of good movement, optimize neuromuscular function, and build strength in the basic foundational movements. According to the National Academy of Sports Medicine, integrated strength training is a reconditioning and rehabilitation program that can be used with any client to reach any goal. There's nothing else like it. It's a systematic approach to sports performance enhancement at its highest level. Using more than one muscle group or integrated strength training involves and improves balance, coordination, and function. It emphasizes the body's core muscles - the abdomen and the back - as stabilizers. This is also known as functional training. Integrated strength training aims to mimic the moves that the body is engineered to do in everyday life.  Our bodies are designed to lift, walk, climb, bend, twist and turn. Integrated strength training exercises are designed to copy and build on these movements. The time that we spend on integrated strength training has optimum carry over in our everyday lives.  This training system is grounded in biomechanics, neurology, functional anatomy, and is built around certain fundamental principles and foundational movement skills. Precise execution of the basic foundational movements is the key to unlocking your athletic potential. Strength, mobility, power, endurance, and overall athleticism are all dependent on having good foundational movement skills. These foundational movements are:

  • Push
  • Pull
  • Squat 
  • Lunge
  • Hinge
  • Rotate 
  • Gait (Walking/Running)

These fundamental human movements should always be the backbone of your training. While it may seem limited at first glance, there are hundreds if not thousands of different exercises you can do that are all derivatives of these fundamental movements. The optimization of your movement will ultimately come down to how well can you perform the fundamentals. Each and every program that I write is custom-tailored to you, your goals, your needs, and of course your logistical limitations. My goal isn't to simply write you a "good" cookie cutter program that works for most people. I want it to work for YOU! The best training program in the world won't help you if you can't adhere to it and make it fit into your busy life.
